Catwalk Trail, Gila National Forest

It was Olive's 5th birthday, and we wanted to do something fun. So we picked up sandwiches from a deli in Silver City and headed north to do some hiking in a cavern called Catwalk Trail. It was cold, I'm not gonna lie. Olive and I were not happy here at the entrance.

Then we found a creek and started skipping rocks.

We ate, we warmed up, we started exploring and stopped complaining.

It was really beautiful!

"A water pipeline along Whitewater Canyon was built in 1893 to provide water for the mill and town. It ran up the very narrow stretches of the canyon, sometimes as much as 20 feet above the canyon floor, and was considered to be an engineering feat in its time. The pipeline was in need of constant maintenance and the workmen who walked the line to repair damage dubbed it the CatwalkIn the 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built a trail consisting of a hanging walkway following the path of the old pipeline. The Forest Service rebuilt the trail in 1961, and in 1978 it was designated a National Recreation Trail."

Then dad took us up the mountain (past the sign that said the road was closed) on a search for the ghost town Mongollon and we almost ran off a cliff.
